Change the world

The term "author" with regard to a literary, artistic or musical work refers to the individual who first produced or created the work. The author is usually also the holder of copyright and is therefore the only person who may reproduce the work or may grant authorisation or permission for the work to be reproduced. In the case of a published edition, the publisher is regarded as the author of the edition.

Exceptions:

  • When a work is produced during the course of an author's service, the employer owns copyright on the work.
  • In the case of students, the copyright on a thesis / dissertation / script / mini-dissertation normally belongs to the author.
  • A copyright holder may also transfer copyright to another party, for example, a publisher
